TotalEnergies Uganda Launches the Revolution Hackathon

July 31, 2023 – TotalEnergies Uganda has today launched the #TErEVolutionUG, a Hackathon challenge aimed at identifying optimal locations for Electric Vehicle (EV) charging points in Kampala.

“As TotalEnergies, we believe that tomorrow’s mobility does not call for a one-size-fits-all approach, but rather for a full range of complementary solutions. We are therefore supporting the development of practical solutions to make mobility safer, cleaner, and more efficient. In doing so, we will establish 150,000 electric vehicle charge points worldwide by 2025 and produce higher-performance batteries to support electric mobility (e-mobility).

This will demonstrate our transition agenda towards net zero, less reliance on fossil fuels and more integration of renewables in our portfolio,” said Philippe GROUEIX, General Manager, TotalEnergies EP Uganda.

In Uganda, TotalEnergies is supporting the transition to electric mobility and will host infrastructure for battery swapping and charging stations at selected service stations. The #TErEvolutionUG hackathon which is aimed at identifying optimal charging stations in Kampala for electric vehicles is therefore another way the Company will contribute to the promotion of e-mobility.

The challenge is open to Ugandans between 18 and 45 years of age who can work with GIS and data science tools or software programming and can form groups of 4 Individuals. Shortlisted groups will receive mentorship and networking opportunities, as well as potential sponsorship and adoption of their ideas by TotalEnergies. The winning team will take home USD 5000, while the first and second runners will take USD 3000 and USD 2000, respectively.

The hackathon will be implemented by Outbox Uganda, an innovation hub that provides mentorship to innovators in Uganda.

Richard ZULU, the Principal at Outbox Uganda said, “Corporate partnerships in the energy sector provide an opportunity for our young people to use their technical skills to build locally relevant digital solutions. As such, we are excited about our partnership with TotalEnergies because it presents an opportunity for young people in our community to leverage an established platform to quickly deploy and grow their e-mobility ideas.”
