Total boosts water and sanitation project in Buliisa

Buliisa - Total E&P Uganda has facilitated a Water and Sanitation project that includes the construction of eight (8) girls’ VIP latrines in Bugungu and Ngwedo secondary schools and rehabilitatation of ten (10) community water sources in Buliisa district.

Total E&P Uganda, in partnership with Community Integrated Development Initiatives (CIDI) and the Buliisa district local government have undertaken this initiative in a bid to improve sanitary conditions and provide clean and safe water to the community and students of the project areas.

“Through the project, we have rehabilitated eight boreholes in Kigwera and Ngwedo sub counties and two others at Bugungu and Ngwedo secondary schools to provide safe and clean water to the community and students of the two schools”, Chris Ocowun, PRO Total E& P Uganda stated.

“We have also contributed towards improving functionality of community water sources by undertaking refresher trainings for the water user management committees as well as the hand pump mechanic associations”, he added.

According to the authorities of the Buliisa district local government and Bugungu and Ngwedo secondary schools, availability of safe and clean water and proper sanitation are critical to improving the learning environment for students. The new girls’ VIP latrines have shower rooms as well as separate latrines for disabled students.

“The girls and boys have been sharing this one block of latrine. But now the girls are blessed with this beautiful VIP latrine courtesy of Total,” Samuel Mubondo, the head teacher of Ngwedo SS remarked, adding that the students have formed health clubs to increase sanitation awareness among students and members of the community.

Total has been at the forefront of promoting health and sanitation in its areas of operation with donations to boost the fight against Cholera in Hoima and Buliisa, aiding community health through donations of garbage bunkers and bins to Pakwach and Anaka towns and the rehabilitation of sanitary blocks destroyed by a storm at Kirama primary school in Buliisa district.
