Climate: Tree planting

TotalEnergies EP Uganda (TEPU) has committed to the National Greening Campaign – Running Out Of Trees (ROOTs) led by Ministry of Water and Environment and Uganda Breweries plus several other corporate companies, NGOs and government agencies with a target of growing 40 million trees by 2025 through the following initiatives.

Buliisa and Nwoya: In 2022, TEPU in partnership with ECOTRUST commissioned its annual tree planting campaign: Totally Green - Grow A Tree Everywhere (GATE) with an objective to reforest 250ha of land by growing 100,000 trees across multiple holdings in Buliisa and Nwoya districts. In addition, TEPU also launched the Gendered Green Investment Campaign targeting 500 women and 1,000 youth to plant trees in public places, schools, and other institutions. These initiatives contribute to combatting climate change, in addition, the Totally Green radio campaign is airing on various radio stations in Buliisa and Nwoya to create awareness on benefits of tree growing and the importance of communities’ participation.

Entebbe Botanical Gardens: In addition, TEPU staff have planted over 500 trees to replace those species that have been struck by lightning or dried out by termites in Botanical Gardens Entebbe thus contributing to this natural tourist attraction established in 1898 on the northern shores of Lake Victoria virtually on the Equator. It has an approximated 309 species of plants, 199 indigenous to Uganda, 122 with known medicinal value and 110 exotic plants.
